You must obtain a Somaliland Visa in advance (usually from the Somaliland Mission in Addis Ababa). Note that a standard Somali visa is generally not recognized for entry into Somaliland.
Day-by-day schedule
Morning: Depart Addis Ababa heading northeast toward Debre Birhan. The drive offers scenic views of the Ethiopian highlands. Lunch: Enjoy a meal in Debre Birhan before ascending the dramatic escarpment toward Ankober.
Arrive at Ankober Palace Lodge, built on the site of Emperor Menelik II’s former palace. Explore the ruins and visit the Ankober Mariam Church, which offers sweeping views over the Rift Valley floor nearly 2,000 meters below.
Settle in for a cool highland evening. This is a prime spot for birdwatchers to catch a glimpse of the endemic Ankober Serin.
